lifelong learning

Dubliners, women, young adults and graduates more likely to pursue lifelong learning

One in ten Dubliners have engaged in lifelong learning. That’s more than twice as many people in Ireland’s south-east, mid-east and border regions.

Lifelong learning and upskilling have been promoted across Europe and beyond to help adults achieve their career ambitions, stay relevant to the jobs market and learn skills that will become increasingly important to the economy.

A total of 177,330 Irish adults were engaged in some form of ongoing study at the end of 2015. That is just over 7 percent of adult population of 2.5 million. The majority of these were taking part in formal learning activities at schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions. However, Ireland falls short of the European average of 11 percent. The EU hopes to increase this to 15 percent by 2020.

While Dubliners are more likely to enter ongoing education, this is also true of women. Female participation in lifelong learning or upskilling is around 8 percent compared to 6.3 percent of men. Continuous education is more popular with younger adults – 13 percent of adults aged 25 to 34 have participated in ongoing education compared to 3 percent of 55 to 64 year olds. Adults with postgraduate degrees are also more likely to pursue ongoing studies as well – 12 percent versus 3 percent of early school leavers.

Lifelong learning enhances skills and personal development

The figures come from a study by an Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN). Una Halligan, EGFSN chairwoman, said that continuous education was a necessity for Ireland.

“We have a well-educated and highly skilled labour force but it is important that people of all ages and at all educational levels participate in learning and upskilling on an ongoing basis in order to sustain their employability. All forms of learning, whether formal of non-formal, contribute to the skills enhancement and personal development of individuals,” she remarked.

Halligan also noted that lifelong learning helped Ireland’s businesses to maintain their competitiveness. In addition, companies who supported the ongoing training had higher employees reporting higher levels of job satisfaction which lead to greater staff retention.

The EGFSN called on the government and industry to invest more in such ongoing learning. The expert group believes this is necessary to meet the predicted skills shortages.

Virtual Expos

Virtual Expos for the IT sector to take place on 28 July

Online Recruitment Fair to take place on Thursday, July 28th from 4pm-8pm

Virtual Expos Ireland runs targeted online recruitment fairs to particular industries. Our upcoming event is for jobseekers and employers working in the IT sector, where there is a real and pressing need for qualified staff.

“ICT professionals are in high demand across Ireland. This has been the case for a number of years and staffing shortages have grown more acute as Ireland’s computer and IT sector continues to grow,” says Bronagh Cotter of Careers Unlimited, organiser of Virtual Expos.

Ireland is home to a number of international tech companies, many of whom have their European headquarters in Dublin. These include Google, Facebook, Amazon, Etsy, IBM and Groupon. In addition, there are a number of home-grown startup successes as well as traditional industries looking to file IT roles. As such, there are significant career opportunities in Ireland for ICT professionals.

“Companies need great staff to thrive, and the shortfall is troubling to many industry experts.  This is one of the reasons our initial Virtual Expos event for the ICT sector was such a success. Because Virtual Expos are run as online, specialised recruitment fairs, companies across Ireland can meet candidates whether they are in Athlone, Athens or Atlanta. This is a hassle-free and cost-effective way for companies to recruit staff, and for employees to find the perfect job.”

Virtual Expos’ online events are free for jobseekers. Attendees register for the event and upload their CVs. Candidates can then make an appointment to chat to employers at a time that suits them during the event. All appointments are conducted via our private portal . Virtual Expos works on a mobile-friendly platform and it requires no downloads or heavy software installations. All candidates need is an internet connection and a browser.

The companies participating in the first Virtual Expos event are actively recruiting. Recruitment sector set for shake up with new specialised online recruitment exhibition

With many avenues available to employers these days when deciding to recruit for their organisation, quality of candidate remains a top priority followed by the actual cost of recruiting. Professional positions, even those advertised on the many available job boards, still tend to be filled by recruitment companies and can take anywhere from 2 – 8 weeks to complete, often resulting in loss of productivity and management focus.

Now, a new Irish venture, offers specialised recruitment services, via dedicated online virtual recruitment exhibitions on a setor-by-sector basis. The result is a far more efficient and cost-effective way to recruit specialised personnel, many of whom do not make themselves available via the traditional broad-based channels like jobs boards, recruitment agencies and Linkedin. has been launched by Careers Unlimited, operator of the national Jobs Expo event, run twice-yearly at Croke Park. The concept is to organise industry-specific online career expos/fairs which connect employers with jobseekers. Careers Unlimited has over 15 years experience within the recruitment and educational sector.

John Travers of Careers Unlimited said, “As a jobseeker, why travel around town, taking time off work, meeting companies & attending interviews when you can participate in an online event from the comfort of your home or anywhere else in the world? The process is very straightforward and requires no downloads. With access to the internet through a web browser you are able to ‘meet’ employers looking to recruit talented people. Recruiters can chat with jobseekers via a confidential text-based platform”. will run its first online virtual recruitment event, aimed at the IT sector on the 25th and 26th November 2015. The event will feature 10 major companies, including banks, IT and financial companies, recruiting for positions.
